The base (backing) for Coated Abrasives

The mostly common coated abrasives are abrasive paper, abrasive paper, resin fiber disc and non-woven cloth. As we know, coated abrasive has three basic elements: Backing, Abrasive grains, bonding agent(resin). Before we ever introduced different grains Today let's see the different bases(backing) for these coated abrasives.

The main types of backing materials are paper, cloth, resin fiber, composite base, non-woven fabric and so on.

1) Paper:

Coated abrasive paper is made of particularly strong and tough fiber, according to different requests to make different quality and specifications. The price of paper is cheaper, generally do not need to make substrate(backing) treatment, the demand amount is very large. According to the use of coated abrasives, the type of paper is divided according to the unit weight, as the following:

2) Cloth

It is fabric formed by weaving a certain fibers. The cloth backing is widely used in the base of coated abrasives, with good flexibility and high strength, but it needs strict substrate(backing) treatment. Because of different fiber organization, the cloth for coated abrasives is mainly cotton cloth, blended cloth(cotton and polyester combined), polyester cloth and so on. Due to the formation of different types cloth, the main organizations of cloth has 1/1, 2/1, 3/1, 4/1, etc. For different coated abrasives, we choose different cloth organization. According to the use of coated abrasives, like paper, cloth is also divided by weight. At present, the weight of cloth has no common standard, but normally can be divided as the following:

3) Resin fiber 

We also call it vulcanized fiber, vulcanized paper. It is a high strength substrate(backing) made of multi-layers cotton fiber, can withstand particularly high mechanical load, high strength, small elongation, good heat resistance, mainly used in the production of resin paper disc and special-shaped abrasives products, according to the requirements of coated abrasive, we can choose this fiber by thickness. According to the different thickness, it has 0.6 mm, 0.7mm, 0.8mm,1.0mm,1.2mm and so on. Normally 0.6mm, 0.7mm, 0.8mm, 1.0mm thickness fiber can be used for making different diameter fiber disc.

0.8mm, 1.0mm,1.2mm resin fiber can be used for for the base of depressed center polishing disc.

4) Composite base

This is made of composite paper and cloth, which synthesizes the advantages of paper and cloth, high strength and minimal elongation. It is mainly used to make high speed heavy load abrasive belt and a small amount of abrasive disc. Generally according to the base type, we divide it into light composite base and heavy composite base.

5) Non-woven fabric

It is one or more fibers are bonded or mechanized so that they have the appearance and properties of cloth without weaving process, mainly used to make soft polishing abrasive, we also called this abrasive cloth as non-woven cloth, surface conditioning cloth etc.
